"i play drums..." is a privately run education service that delivers professional drum tuition to vulnerable and disaffected young people in schools who suffer with low self esteem

The goal is to give the children the opportunity to build their self esteem through learning a new skill. Recognising that they have the ability and strength to begin a new chapter where they can improve their self image and belief by learning this fantastic and fun instrument. This can go towards preventing such things as bullying and can help them become more confident in social situations.

         WHY PLAY DRUMS?

  • Can help to relieve symptoms of depression

  • Enhances well being

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Neutralsies stress

  • Burns calories

  • Improves circulation

  • Increases energy

  • Boosts Cardio

They will have the opportunity to have free drum lessons with a person who is neutral to their situation. Someone who will strive to ensure they have new unique experience that offers them an escape from the everyday struggles they maybe facing.

I have worked with countless students who come from all social economic backgrounds, to students who have ADHD, Autism, Asperger's, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Down Syndrome & Dementia. I have worked with students from specialists schools where they have behavioural issues that may cause them to not be suited for a main stream educational environment.

Lessons will take place with myself, a professional drummer & educator with over 18 years of teaching experience. Along with years of playing in many musical situations and with many different people. I have spent years honing my craft and approach, resulting in a highly successful drum education practice known as 'Modern Drum Tuition'. This provides 1-1 lessons at my home studio, as well as in schools throughout the local area.

     BENEFITS OF PLAYING DRUMS

  • Helps build self esteem

  • Learning and playing an instrument provides a sense of accomplishment

  • Builds confidence and fosters self awareness, all of which contribute to a positive self image

  • Drums is a physical stress relieving instrument

  • It induces relaxation & lowers blood pressure

  • Reduces Cortisol levels (a stress hormone)

  • Through the physical aspect of playing drums, endorphines are released which can elevate your mood

  • A great way to release pent up emotions and tension, allowing self expression to come out

  • Research has also shown that playing drums can influence brainwave activity, potentially increasing alpha and theta waves, which are associated with relaxation, creativity and improved problem- solving abilities

I want to be able to work with the children/ teenagers who are suffering from bullying. As a father of two myself, bullying is something that I cannot tolerate and if this campaign can help in anyway to make a child's day tolerable and even a happy one then "i play drums..." will strive to do so.

I myself throughout my life have struggled with self esteem, to which playing drums gave me an identity and the confidence to build myself up and realise what I have to offer as a person. I would genuinely remind myself at low points

"i play drums...". This just always seemed to make me smile, persevere and move forward.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Selected students who meet the desired criteria will receive a school terms worth of free 1-1 drum lessons

  • They will receive a set of free drumsticks and practice tips

  • After the term has finished there will always be the potential for students who have found the process helpful to continue onto further lessons.

Giving other people this opportunity can potentially change their way of thinking and processing their environment.

Music is a therapy in itself, one I would like to use to help these vulnerable young students
